We've been working really hard since the end of 2010 to regularly bring you tasty new designs. Decclo.com is the only place you'll find Merton tshirts chosen by Merton himself and our exclusive Surfers Healing tshirts of which 50% of the proceeds benefit Surfers Healing.

We're also putting together our first official Decclo summer line which will launch next month. It's going to be a sunshiny smorgasbord of color inspired by the Californian summertime. Part of our preparations for this grand event is that we're clearing out a LOT of our current designs for $8 and we've thrown in free shipping on all orders. It's a really good time to stock up! Hurry though because once they're gone they're gone.

We also want to thank everyone for supporting us this far whether you've submitted designs, purchased shirts, tweeted about us, wore our shirt proudly etc. We appreciate it all more than you know!

Quick Note:

From my experience, it helps to have knowledge and inspiration when learning anything...especially when design is involved.
I have searched through so many websites, blogs and volumes of literature to become inspired. Recently I came across this book, Threads Not Dead. This book is a compilation of industry professionals, their experiences and advice for crushing the apparel design world. For all who design or aspire to be designers, this is a great resource. Check it out!

Contest: Design for Merton!

Last year I discovered a youtube personality that made me laugh so hard I thought there was something wrong with me. The ingredients to such hilarity - ChatRoulette, a piano, a green hoodie, and spontaneous lyrical genius. Those are some of the main ingredients of PianoChatImprov: Merton.

International musical man of mystery, Merton has agreed to team up with Decclo and let us produce two official Merton tshirts.

Here are the design competition specifications:

Submit designs from now until February 28th via www.decclo.com
TWO designs will be selected by Merton, printed and sold from the Decclo website
Designs must be Merton related, creativity is encouraged
Packet of high-resolution Merton images can be found right here, you can edit and use these in your design
Use the front of the tshirt as your canvas
Do NOT include Decclo logo in your design
Use 1 - 5 colours
Keep a high resolution (300+ dpi) vector copy of your design - we'll need it if you win
Designs to be printed on either medium beige or silver tshirt, swatches below.
Submit a 325px by 350px artwork image and a 192px by 220px thumbnail to www.decclo.com (just follow the instructions)

Surfers Healing: The waves, the hug.

2010 was quite the year for us as we found our footing and navigated through the adventures that came our way as we started up. We've learned a lot and are excited for 2011!

We're privileged to have worked with Surfers Healing on our first official Project Karma contest. The design that won voters choice is "The waves, the hug" by the talented Annymal.

This design will be available in our store soon along with "Paradise" chosen by Izzy Paskowitz. Surfers Healing will receive 50% of the sales of these shirts to help fund their free surf camps which benefits autistic children and their families. It's a cause we're proud to be involved with and we're excited to see these designs being worn!

Project Karma: Surfers Healing

We're working hard organizing contests with some great organisations and individuals for 2011 and could use your help. Our goal is to introduce our followers to these people who are doing good in the world by willingly sharing their talents, compassion, skills, and zest for life. We want to support them by giving back in the way we know best - tshirts. The effort that goes into a tshirt is immense and we're so impressed that the artists we've worked with so far have given their time to an organisation they had never heard of before and came to feel a connection with.

Surfers Healing speaks to everyone. Their connection to the sea speaks loudly to me, along with their messages of hope, love, importance of childhood, thinking outside of the box, generosity, spirit, and unity.

We want to give back to them as much as we can and we want to see the two winning tshirt designs on the bodies of young people, old people, city people, every kind of person!

Surfers Healing will be featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network in January in The Swell Life. This coincides with our tshirt design contest.

Project Karma: Surfers Healing

We're excited to announce the first Project Karma design competition and are so excited to be doing some good for such an amazing organization: Surfers Healing.

Surfers Healing was founded by Izzy and Danielle Paskowitz. The organization is completely non-profit and depends on the good of others to help fund surf camps where they share the therapy the sea has to offer with children with autism and their families. In order for Surfers Healing to run they have to raise $10,000 to cover camp expenses, equipment, transportation, and to be able to feed participants each year.

Contest runs from now until December 18th
Voting will run from December 19th until January 3nd
TWO designs will win - 1 design with the most votes and 1 picked by Izzy, himself

I've come across a few things this week that have blown my mind. People never cease to amaze!

Alexa Meade is a 23 year old artistic genius. Try and wrap your brain around this.

An awesome painting, right? Right!... and wrong but right! Alexa uses a technique "that can perceptually compress three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional plane." I'll dumb that down for you because I sure as goodness needed it dumbed down for me. The guy in the picture above is an actual man... in real life. Alexa turned him into a 2D painting... Forget me, my brain is blowing again. Go see for yourself.

Have you heard of Rail-to-Trails Conservation? It's not a new effort at all, they're older than me but their idea is completely new to me and I love it! Converting old railway lines into trails makes absolute sense! There's a nationwide network of paths cleared for railway lines, why not convert them into trails since they're no longer in use? These 19,000 miles worth of ready trails give us the chance to experience fresh, country air. A couple lungs full of the fresh stuff will add 10 years to your life... that's not scientifically proven at all but let me tell you, you'll feel like it's true when you experience it! I'm already looking up rail-trails near me.

Boxed Water is INDEED Better!

Why didn't anyone think of this before? That's the first question we had. The second, How do we get some over here in Seattle???

The idea of boxed water was born in April of 2008. It was publicly launched in March of 2009. We just heard about it this week and we LOVE it! They decided that bottled water shouldn't be bottled at all----it should be boxed. About 76% of their container is made from trees which is, of course, a renewable resource. In addition more and more recycle centers across the US are being added to the list of those capable of recycling these boxes. They ship their boxes unfilled much like a plastic or glass bottle but get this, they can flatten the box and ship two pallets worth of containers (about 5% of a truckload) which equals the same amount of plastic or glass bottles that would fill 5 trucks. Talk about reducing your carbon footprint x3.

Not only is the product absolute genius, they want to give back. Who doesn't love a company that gives back? Boxed Water is Better is still a baby but they plan on giving 20% back, half of which will go to world water relief foundations and the other half to reforestation foundations. We think they are a perfect fit with our very own Project Karma, don't you? We hope to have a new press link just like these guys in a year or so. Three cheers for companies with awesome products and philanthropic movements!

It's come to my attention that humans are becoming more awesome. Let me tell you, I believe in evolution, as in "a process in which something passes by degrees to a different stage" and not actually the ape to human theory... although I once knew a guy that... nevermind.

Evolution. A person gets an idea. The idea grows into something else. The person figures out a way to conquer the hurdles standing in their way and make the idea happen.

Put together a bicycle and a blender... do you see where this is going? A bike. A blender.

During the last year, I have come a cross many different resources that have helped me become a better designer and business person. Many times we have great ideas but don't know how to display them. Well...I recently came across a great resource for all of you aspiring designers.

The collective genius of GO MEDIA and THE BLACK AXE has created a great site where you can upload your designs on a t-shirt, adjust the color of the garment, placement of your artwork and will even allow you to scale your artwork. They do this all while making it look like it's an actual printed shirt.

Please take a stroll over to www.shirtmockup.com and try it for yourself. It only allows a maximum file size of 300kb and in the JPG and GIF formats only. I have used this numerous times and I LOVE IT!

Also, if you are serious about designing tees or hoodies and use Photoshop, then head over and check out their layered psd files for more control. I use them now and love em! This is genius and we thought they deserved a shout out!

We like to experience local culture and part of that is the partaking of local delicacies. I wouldn't say I'm a junk foodie BUT I can certainly appreciate a greasy burger as much as the next guy. If you're in Seattle you'll have almost definitely heard of and experienced Dick's Drive-in. We're appreciators of family run businesses and charitable ones at that, hence why we've already featured this establishment in our Friday Photo post and also why we've found ourselves lining up for a double deluxe at 2 in the morning numerous times.

At Decclo we aim to become one of those establishments. We want our name to make people think of goodness and charitable acts. We want you to feel a part of something amazing when you wear us. We don't, however, suggest eating our tshirts but we do recommend you wear us out when you're queuing for a delicious meal and make us part of your memories.

We're wasting no time in launching our Day of the Dead design competition which is running from last Wednesday through October 6th. We want to celebrate the ancient, iconic, colourful holiday by inviting all artists to create Day of the Dead inspired designs, which if chosen will be printed on tees and hoodies AND sold from the current decclo dot com right on time for the celebrations in November! Winners will be announced on October 13th.

Think catrinas, sugar skulls, orange mexican marigolds... We're excited to see what you come up with!

Where do you pull inspiration from? Whilst developing Decclo we've found ourselves in that familiar "new kid in school" situation. We're new but we want to fit in. We want to fit in but we also want to stand out. We've not mentioned our site launch in a while because we were close to launching when we decided to make a BIG change - and we haven't mentioned it because we were getting tired of hear ourselves put a date out there only to not meet it, it was getting ridiculous. The site design is out of our control but Decclo is not. We've created our niche and we LOVE who we've become.

Sometimes whilst designing tshirts I feel like my brain goes numb. I begin to second guess myself after looking at the same design for a couple of hours. If my design doesn't sit quite right or I don't know if I've added too much or need to add a little more I head over to Design Seeds and refresh my brain. I then let my eyes feast on what they have to offer and then I snap out of my wacky design slump and get to it. Design Seeds appeals not only to my right brain but also my left. Go see. We love a good adventure! Like everyone else on the planet there's places we want to go and things we want to see. We're lucky to have friends who have lived that dream and share their stories with us but when I get the itch to travel and only have spare change in my pockets and too much work to do I can travel pretty much anywhere I want via Earthcam.

I think I'll go to Paris today...

Summer is on it's way...FINALLY. Here in the PNW when the sun comes out we celebrate. In fact, in the PNW we have what some call the, "50 degrees shirts off guy." I must admit, I have broken out the swimsuit on similar days. However, as we move into the summer, I invite you to keep your shirts on.

As summer arrives, Decclo will be unveiling an ultralight shirt for those blistering-hot days! This shirt will allow you to comfortably sport your favorite Decclo gear while maintaining breathability and style. We will give you a sneak peek in a week or two.

The Decclo blog will be going idle for a few weeks as we move into our new space. During the moving process we will make sure and grab some photos so you can se us in action...

Just a quick note:

We wanted to announce that Decclo is on the move to a bigger and better facility. We will not only operate our daily functions out of this location but also be paired with our sister company, Crux - Branded Apparel and Screen Printing in the same office space.

This is HUGE news because it allows us to have better quality control, streamline production and inventory, and we can be much more innovative with our sister company, Crux, by our side!

Upgrade!!!

We have returned from a wonderful business trip in Vancouver, Washington. We learned more about the process of production for our clothing. It was a very worthwhile experience.

So, what are we upgrading to?

In the past, Decclo has adopted a widely used process of printing. Typically a majority of shirts you get while in high school, college or working for a business use a type of ink called plastisol.

Plastisol is basically a plastic that is cured onto the cotton in the design you desire. It has been widely used due to ease and cost. You can tell if your shirt has plastisol by the raised plastic-y feel to the design.

However, there are other methods of printing. Two that we really like are called Waterbased and Discharge printing.

Waterbased is exactly what it sounds like...its a waterbased ink that is printed onto the garment. The water is then evaporated off and it leaves the ink. This leaves no feel to the design and looks as if it was sewn this way. Cool.

Discharge is an application that basically removes the pigment of the ink used to color the specific garment and then it replaces the bleached out area with a pigment of choice. Its pretty much magical. This also leaves no feel to the design. Rad.

These printing applications are typically used on higher end clothing.

Now Decclo has adopted these methods! Expect to see the new designs from here on out printed using one of these methods (except for the designs that call for puff, reflective, metallic inks).

Key Relationships - A Quick Note

Building relationships is a key ingredient to running any successful company. From dentistry to beverages, if you cannot create good working relationships then you will not be as effective if you otherwise could be.

Over the last few months, the team here at Decclo has been working hard to forge solid working relationships from our suppliers to our printers. As we have slowly established a good relationship with each company, we have found that these companies are more willing and able to give us deals and expedite orders.

This is key as we continue to build our list of contacts, distributors, retailers and other business related contacts.

I am sure this comes as obvious to many of you but its neat to see it in action. People are willing to help as long as you ask questions and remain kind...Just be kind and you will see some great things happen! Karma...right?

Finally...some progression!

In this online world, having a great website comes at a great expense. For us, having developers follow through on their end has been difficult-- until recently. To-date, we are on our third development company. The first two companies bowed out of the race during development stages. Both were U.S. companies. We feel that during this economic time, we should be supporting local companies... However, the two U.S. companies we hired both decided they didn't want the work. Sad? You betcha. It has pushed our project out 4 months further than we had ever anticipated -- worst case scenario!

We have been working with an offshore development company in Bangalore, India (recommended by a large web firm out of Portland). They have gone above and beyond the call of duty to assure the sites functional attributes are in place and design isn't overbearing... but friendly! AND they have made many on-the-fly changes for us. They also communicate in writing and documentation SO MUCH BETTER than what we had been used to.

The good news today is that our deliverable date is set and we should see the final site in our hands and functioning properly during the first week of April. We have pushed this date out later than we had originally hoped for when hiring Classic Informatics Pvt Ltd, but we have made some changes to our original plan. In a nutshell-----> GOOD NEWS!!

So for now, the vote blog [vote-decclo.blogspot.com] will serve as our voting platform until the site is complete. I wish I could give an inside view or detail as to what its going to be like. Just keep your designs flowing and keep watching for the official launch of Decclo.com.

The closest outlet...

I've always needed a creative outlet, something to get all the meh's and the bleh's and grrrrr's out.

The first I remember was rollerskating, which can be very creative. Then there was glass painting and other artsy things like drawing, chalking etc.. Writing and then playing air guitar in the mirror around the time I went to my first concert (Greenday at 13) until now and probably forever more. Along with air guitar I love taking pictures. When I do I like to have a theme as I'm sure you've noticed from the Decclo campaign.

A theme and some good tunes to bounce about to is all I need, the tune is sometimes just in my head. Faces become the canvas. I paint people into lions and aardvarks. Then I make them make ferocious noises that are really embarrassing at first or pretend to laugh ridiculously so they end up laughing for real - and hard! Then I capture that little sparkle in their eye as they realise what just happened and feel really light and happy and then laugh some more.

Hey all,
As we're getting organized and ready to launch Vote Decclo I just wanted to update you on a couple things.

First, our shipping is only $5. If you buy more than one shirt it'll add $5 per shirt. Don't frett, that money will be refunded, it's just a little glitch with paypal checkout. Also, if you're outside of Washington the sales tax will be refunded too.

Happy New Year!!!

Last year (2009) saw many monumental moments. Many have had a tough year to say the least. The worldwide economy seemed to grow stale leaving so many hardworking people as a loss or like us, at least biting our fingernails. But 2010 is here and there is no looking back.

As many of you know, Decclo was due to launch about 5 months ago. We obviously have missed that date and are continuing the fight to open up shop online ASAP. There is not a solid date for launch as we are now on our 3rd group of developers for the Decclo project. It is anticipated that decclo.com will launch in late Jan or Feb. We have made valiant efforts to maximize our little knowledge coupled with our desire to succeed. I feel we have done well.

We want to thank all who have helped us through a rough but promising first few months. We couldn't have done it without you. We encourage all to participate, send ideas, just shoot us a line if you have something to say, suggest or even relay a good joke.

2010 is our year.

It is the year where some pretty stellar things are going to happen;maybe not earth shattering, but very exciting.

So keep your ear to the street, spread the good news (about Decclo/PK) and keep smiling. No matter what you do...don't worry, be happy!

This tee is perfect because I love trees and I love shirts and I super love em put together. I've also come to notice that those shirts with trees on them are exponentially more comfy than those without trees one them and I sure do love comfy shirts too!

Just a quick note:

The past few weeks, things have been coming together

...well sort of...

We did experience a few hiccups in with the site and the programming however our trusted developers found a way to overcome the challenge and now we are back and moving. This will delay the process and probably push us out another week or so. We should be online soon and making magic happen.

Keeping with our core values as a company, we have decided to go RETAIL!!! We will not have a retail store as of yet however in addition to our upcoming website, we are selling the Decclo and Project Karma brands in stores coming this fall and winter. This is a ground breaking announcement for all of you designers and consumers of the best product in the world.

You might be asking what this means for you as designers and consumers. Well let me expound. Designers, this gives you more potential to make mucho cash by simply winning one of our design contests. In addition to the lump sum $300.00 and $1 royalty for every full price sale online, you will now receive $.50 for every wholesale purchase. Don't follow me??? check out the Decclo scenario below:

Guerrilla Marketing - huh?

As many of you know, our first print has arrived, Tree City, along with the Decclo Original Tee. This is SUPER exciting news. Share in the excitement by sporting your new Decclo Tree City or Decclo Original tee around town. Brendan, the designer of Tree City seriously nailed this design.

On the other hand, now that we are starting to lift off the ground little by little I must bring up the subject of guerrilla marketing. I am not talking about an 800 pound gorilla as that is something completely different. Rather I am talking about GUERRILLA marketing. The difference is in the spelling and...really...everything else, except presence. No one can avoid the presence of an 800 pound gorilla in their room...typically people cant ignore awesome guerrilla marketing either. The definition of guerrilla marketing (from WIKIPEDIA...I know, I know) is as follows:

Typically, guerrilla marketing campaigns are unexpected and unconventional; potentially interactive; and consumers are targeted in unexpected places. The objective of guerrilla marketing is to create a unique, engaging and thought-provoking concept to generate buzz, and consequently turn viral.

So what does guerrilla marketing have to do with Decclo? It is how we do business...unconventional, unexpected, unique, engaging, thought-provoking...and guess what, all of those things subsequently create buzz. As we start to release products and marketing materials, we encourage people to spread the word in unique ways. We encourage you to tell your friends about Decclo and Project Karma. Give away your stickers...be unexpected. If you are stoked about Decclo and Project Karma like you will be, spread the news online, in forums, on the streets and alleyways of the cyber-world. Rock the Decclo gear EVERYWHERE you go. Take photos and send them to us. We will post them online and you will gain worldwide stardom. Buy a Decclo product for a friend, foe or even your grandma. Send a sticker back with your NetFlix...whatever you want to do (that is legal of course), DO IT. Just remember, Decclo is unconventional...and thinking outside the box gives us the ability to be AWESOME.

Promo Designs and Business Minds

Today officially marks the launch of our promo designs...we should have them in and ready for sale in nearly 10 day. Its been interesting trying to come up with designs that are attractive, informational and just freaking sweet artwork. We couldn't have launched our Decclo Promo Tees without one specific person, Brendan Hamill.

Brendan is pretty much a brutal force when designing. He rocks the creativity and brings the rukus to our tees. Pretty much, he is one of Decclo's best assets. Keep an eye on this designer as he continues to rock the Decclo community. You will see his work again!..and you will probably see him on DeccloTV.

Thats another announcement - DeccloTV will launch shortly after our site goes live. DeccloTV is a place where you will get to see a behind the scenes look at what we are all about. Also, it will be a place where we will feature designers, their bios, other crazy stuff that pertains to the Decclo lifestyle...However we are still conceptualizing so if you have an idea about something that would bring the rukus, message me on FB.

Now to report on the business side of things. We are slowly appraoching the website launch date: 4+ weeks to go. With that being said, all of the small print issues like specialty accounting and legal need to come together within the next week. Still working out some unknowns however everything looks super positive.

Another item we are currently occupied with is the procurement of shipping materials including shipping labels. Now there are a few ways to go with this. I would like to implement something unique that sets us apart as far as shipping materials go. We can use a simple poly bag, white, not exciting or we can spend the extra money for a full color poly and rock it with a sweet shipping label. However I think we will phase into the uniqueness. Decclo needs to remain a viable business and during start-up, this is super important.

Start-ups fail all the time. Often times it is due to mismanagement of funds. This is something I am trying to specifically focus on. Do more with less...right? Thats our goal so we can provide our designers and customers with the best product, at the best price with the best results.

The idea behind the idea

Many people have heard about Decclo from the chatter that has been generated lately. Some have asked, "what is Decclo." It's hard to explain what Decclo is without explaining the business model we have used to structure Decclo. I hope this doesn't sound too technical but I hope it will give you a glimpse as to why we chose this innovative model over the traditional "the man" model.

The best way to understand our model is through our mantra; for the people, by the people. Crowd Sourcing or User Innovation are just a few names the genius scholars have given this model. Though obvious, this model hasn't been really accepted until now.

Basically we (the business) create a place where people can come together, discuss, conceptualize, design, promote and choose what they, the end users really want in a product. This takes out so much guess work from a business perspective. But this isn't about business...it's much more than that.

For the people, by the people allows countless individuals across the world to promote individuality and express creativity and vision that otherwise might be lost. It brings creativity to the forefront and a refining process to product design.

Furthermore, Decclo has implemented a royalty system to reward our designers who's designs are chosen to be printed and made into products. This reward system is something you wont find everywhere but is definitely essential to keeping a good bay of designs to pull from.

The for the people, by the people model is awesome in and of itself. However Decclo has adopted Project Karma into the Decclo Family as Rachel mentioned before. Project Karma is what really makes me excited. It is the only way to successfully operate a business while being able to give back to the less fortunate. I have traveled from Canada down through Mexico all the way to the bottom of South America. Without question, every country, city and town I have visited, there has been an opportunity for service

With Project Karma we can fulfill that need. For every item purchased through the Project Karma brand, we will donate a shirt for children in disadvantaged nations and crisis situations across the world and right here in our back yard.

Imagine not ever having the experience of wearing a new shirt, one with a unique and original design. Imagine never having the happiness of receiving a gift. Many across the globe haven't ever felt that feeling. A simple shirt can make a difference. Its the Project Karma difference; And that's why I am so stoked we have that chance.

What the heck is Decclo?

This is Rachel. I am the wife of the guy (Jake) who has taken on this endeavor of starting his own company. To tell you the truth we don't exactly remember how he decided to start Decclo. I think we saw other companies doing this similar type of model and thought of other ways to do it and the idea just kept snowballing from there. That was about a year ago. After a failed attempt to buy a fixer-upper and the decision to not buy a second car yet, we thought, "let's just start this company already..." We've been saving money and writing our ideas down and here we are now!

For those of you reading about Decclo for the first time let me explain what Decclo is! Decclo is an internet based company where graphic designers submit their designs. The website community (anyone and everyone who signs up--you don't have to be a graphic designer) votes on that design and/or leaves feedback in comments for the designer. The winning designs become custom t-shirts (or hoodies, hats, etc.) for you to have the chance of owning. Our goal is to have artists from all over the world use our website as a way to make some sort of extra cash and be seen by other artists. Something we are including is a giving arm called Project Karma. Certain designs will be selected by us to be included in PK and for every one of those shirts purchased, we will give one to a child in need somewhere.

We want to pay it forward and our plan is to do this through humanitarian efforts and paying our designers a basic royalty for their winning designs. The winning designs will be given a percentage of every shirt of their design that ever sells. How cool is that?! If you won, and your shirt sold 100 or 10,000...you'll get money for it, every shirt! This model is where our tagline of "For the people, by the people" came from. We originally wanted to call the company Declaration Clothing-For the people, by the people but because of copyright infringement we shortened it to Decclo and kept the 'For the people, by the people' because that's what our clothing is. We can't wait to see where this takes us and how we can help those in need. Help us out by spreading the word, that alone is like gold to us right now :)
